Just a few streets from the center of Sanur, a small but vital community health post has been quietly supporting mothers and children through every stage of life — from before marriage to long after birth.

We sat down with Ibu Aenithea, a kader (volunteer coordinator) at Posyandu Sekuta, to learn more about the programs available and what support actually looks like on the ground for mothers in this community.

FROM NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH TO HEALTH POST

Posyandu Sekuta was established around 2002, growing out of what began as a simple neighbourhood gathering (poskamling) into a dedicated post for family welfare. Its mission has stayed the same ever since: supporting the wellbeing of families in the Sekuta community.

PROGRAM, ACCESS, AND COST

The posyandu covers every stage of family life — pre-marital health guidance for engaged couples (catin), care for pregnant mothers (bumil), pre- and post-birth support, and monitoring for infants and children under five (baduta and balita). Volunteer kaders guide families through each program, working under the direction of Denpasar Selatan’s puskesmas and the sub-district’s family support team (TPK).

Services are free and open to any resident of Sekuta — local or from elsewhere in Bali or Indonesia — as long as they have valid ID. There’s no registration process or referral needed; families simply attend when posyandu activities are held.

PRIVACY IS QUITE THE CHALLENGE

The biggest hurdle, Ibu Aenithea explains, isn’t logistics — it’s privacy. Many pregnant women don’t disclose their pregnancy unless a kader has already built a relationship with them beforehand. Understanding a family’s situation first, before offering help, is what makes support land the way it’s meant to.

“During Covid, we still had to deliver supplementary food door-to-door on schedule — it was nerve-wracking, since social distancing was supposed to come first. But the families still needed us.”

That moment, Ibu Aenithea says, captures the posyandu’s spirit best: showing up, even when it’s hard.

Working alongside the puskesmas and TPK, Posyandu Sekuta hopes its programs will keep improving to better reach the families who need them most — and Ibu Aenithea is quick to credit the volunteer kaders who make that possible.

A NOTE FROM BELARASA INDONESIA

At Belarasa Indonesia, we believe supporting mothers starts with knowing what resources already exist around them. Posyandu Sekuta is one of those resources — quietly present, consistently available, and deeply committed to the families of Sanur.
